Japanese Watermelons

The myth was that, Japanese watermelons are incredibly expensive (about 50usd a piece). In addition, i've heard that Japanese watermelons are meant to be square too. I took it as my duty to inform the world that this myth is in fact

True.

The following information has been taken from cnn.com and the sources are stated at the end of this article, in case you wish to read the original article.

The facts

  • Cubic fruit comes with a caveat: Each square watermelon costs 10,000 yen, the equivalent of about $82. Regular watermelons in Japan cost from $15 to $25 each.

  • "You can find two-inch cubes" in groceries

So why did the Japanese think of making...well...a square watermelon?

Simply, Japan is a tiny country, with a whole lot of people. Put 2+2 together you realise that there is a lack of space in Japan.

"A fat, round watermelon can take up a lot of room in a refrigerator, and the usually round fruit often sits awkwardly on refrigerator shelves."

How is this done? Is there any Genetic modification involved?

The answer is NO. These square watermelons are not in any way genetically modified. The melons are grown in a square tempered glass case while the fruit is growing, so the fruit is basically forced to grow into that shape.

Seem impossible? Not quite. Remember what the chinese women had to go through less than a century ago? Their feet would be bound very tightly so they would grow into a tiny shape in order to make the women walk more graceful and they wouldn't be able to run away from their husbands.

**Warning, the pictures included in this section is gross. You've been warned**

Chinese women would have to wear shoes like these, these things are about 4-6 inches long. And their feet would basically grow into that shape. They would turn out like....

This.

Now do you understand why it is very possible for them to manipulate the shape of the watermelon? Back to the watermelon.

There ya go. I guess it wasn't a very good example to relate disfiguring feet to watermelons. They look incredibly cute, but remember, they cost $82 a piece. Resembles very closely to something my friend is thinking of inventing. It's called the...

Cubicow

She will probably run into many problems with PETA (People for the ethical treatment for animals...or People Eating Tasty Animals)...but it'll be interesting.

Conclusion

It's funny. I want a square orange.
